Former Minister and PN Secretary-General Francis Zammit Dimech passes away at 70

Francis Zammit Dimech, former Nationalist Party (PN) Minister and Secretary-General, passed away at the age of 70. His political career spanned decades, during which he played a significant role both locally and at the European level.

Born on 23rd October 1954, and raised in St Julian’s, Zammit Dimech graduated as a lawyer from the University of Malta in 1979, specialising in finance and later in media law. He also pursued further studies in the United Kingdom. Before fully committing to politics, he had a background in journalism, working as both a journalist and editor for various local newspapers.

Zammit Dimech began his political journey at a young age and contested his first general election in 1987 during a critical period in Malta’s political history. He was successfully elected and continued to serve in Parliament until 2017. Over the years, he held several ministerial roles, including Minister for Transport and Communications, Environment, Resources and Infrastructure, Tourism and Culture, and Foreign Affairs. Between 2017 and 2019, he also served as a Member of the European Parliament representing the Nationalist Party.

From 2020 to 2021, he served as the PN’s Secretary-General and chaired the party’s media company, Media.Link Communications. Most recently, he was appointed Acting President of the Republic of Malta.

Paying tribute to Zammit Dimech on social media, PN leader Bernard Grech described him as a loyal and dedicated servant of the nation and the party. “He would smooth over any obstacle, defuse disagreements, and always offered a smile, even in challenging moments. Francis was always ready to help and advise, but never interfered unless asked,” Grech said.

The Maltese Herald expresses its sincere condolences to the family.
