Trial by jury of accused bomb-makers that killed Daphne Caruana Galizia begins today

The trial by jury of the accused bomb-makers that killed Daphne Caruana Galizia began earlier today.  The accused are Adrian and Robert Agius (known as the Maksar brothers) and Jamie Vella. They are accused of supplying the bomb to the Degiorgio brothers who executed the murder of the journalist. The case will involve up to 200 witnesses.

Daphne Caruana Galizia, Malta’s most popular journalist and writer, was killed on October 16th, 2017, in the afternoon as she drove her car in her Bidnija hometown. The bomb was planted under the seat of her car and killed her instantly.

George and Alfred Degiorgio were given a 40 year prison sentence each for executing the murder. Vince Muscat, a friend of the Degiorgio brothers who was also found guilty of executing the murder and was given a 15-year prison sentence. George Degiorgio was in the news after his conviction for being granted prison leave.

The man who is accused of commissioning the hit, Yorgen Fenech, is out on bail. He will also stand trial by jury.
