The Freedom Flotilla vessel, “Conscience”, was to pick up humanitarian aid including food and water, from Malta before continuing its voyage to Gaza, activists have said yesterday. The vessel was attacked by Israeli drones as it was preparing to enter Malta’s harbour.
Israel has not denied or acknowledged the attack, but unconfirmed reports state that Israel demanded the Maltese authorities to refuse entry to the ship. An Israeli plane flew around the same area where the vessel attacked hours prior.
The crew of the vessel has accepted an offer by the Maltese authorities to repair the ship on site. Discussions were held between Transport Malta and the captain of the ship in preparation for these repairs which are expected to commence soon.
The ship has been refused entry to Malta after Palau withdrew the vessel’s flag and registration. The vessel is currently loaded with up to 32 tonnes of fuel which is aimed to be delivered to Gaza.
EU Commissioner Glenn Micallef condemned the attack as a blatant violation of international law.
