More than 10,000 people have signed a parliamentary petition calling for Manoel Island to be transformed into a national heritage park, just six weeks after its launch. With two weeks remaining before the signature window closes, the campaign continues to gain momentum.
The petition is spearheaded by the Manoel Island: Post Għalina campaign, led by Moviment Graffitti and Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar, and backed by over 40 organisations, including the Church’s Environmental Commission and the Chamber of Architects.
Supporters argue that Manoel Island’s development contract with MIDI, due for renegotiation, presents a rare opportunity to replace luxury apartments with public green space. They highlight the area’s dense population, around 150,000 residents, as a key reason to preserve the island as a recreational and ecological refuge.
Campaigners say transforming the site into a park would protect its heritage buildings and provide health and environmental benefits to communities across Malta. They urge the government and developers to reconsider the island’s future in light of public demand.
