I remember a time in the Labour Party where its young wing was its most progressive element but today’s generation of Labour youths are missing in every and most important national issue and crisis and their role has been reduced to simply as cheerleader for the Prime Minister and the Labour Party leader.
The Vice-Mayor of Rabat, is Matthew Chetcuti, a young Labour Party activist who is also an FŻL member and has been active with the Party for some years. He is not someone who lacks authority or presence in the Party, as a loyalist of the Prime Minister, he can freely express himself and criticise others without much repercussion.
Yet Matthew Chetcuti chooses to remain silent: just as he and the rest of Labour’s youth have chosen silence on the rule of law, corruption, and abuse of power. Even on issues like the environment and the housing crisis, they lack the courage to speak out – despite the fact that supposedly, as socialists, they are be morally and politically compelled to speak up. So, on the Tal-Virtù development, Matthew Chectucti has also remained silent.
I don’t expect Sandro Craus to stand up for the environment, but if the Labour youth wing can’t even summon the courage to speak up on these small issues, despite being in a position of power, it’s a damning indictment of the Labour Party, one that should condemn it to the Opposition benches until its members come to their senses.
