Magistrate Monica Vella has been suspended over administrative failing including a large workload of pending Court cases totaling up to 1,897 total criminal cases. She is the Magistrate with the highest number of pending cases. She has appealed her decision and as a result she is still presiding over her Court cases.
The Magistrate previously landed in hot water for issues with her tax declarations. She is currently presiding over a number of high-profile cases including the phantom job case of Melvin Theuma (the middle-man in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia).
The decision to suspend her was taken by the Commission for the Administration of Justice.
