The popular social media page Soviet Visuals, which posts historical photos and videos of the Soviet Union, is being criticised for sharing an unrealistic depiction of a Soviet kitchen. The photo, that was sourced online, contains a description suggesting it was intended for a school project aimed at re-creating Soviet era imagery.
The photo was criticised for including a toaster, a very rare item in the Soviet Union apart from the wide space of the kitchen and even the window. Many Russians and Eastern Europeans commenting also said that it was not a realistic depiction. Others reacted by posting actual images of Soviet kitchens while other posts took a more humorous turn.
Soviet Visuals is run by Varia Bortsova, who was born in Moscow in 1980. Bortsova once penned an article in The New York Times in which she described Russia’s war on Ukraine as a hell imposed on Ukrainians by Vladimir Putin, and argued that Putin’s regime had to collapse for a new Russia to be built. She describes the current political atmosphere in Russia as Stalinist.
Bortsova lives in Zurich, Switzerland and works in marketing for the International Olympic Committee.
