Dbeibeh still in control of Tripoli despite protests: salaries of irregular militiamen withheld

Protests in Tripoli are not unusual, but have been increasing in the past few days with more men coming out in the streets calling for the resignation of Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh. Our sources in Libya inform us that protests are mixed between civilians demanding the removal of all irregular militias, and other men who are protesting against Dbiebeh in support of his political rivals or the armed-militias.

Tensions in the capital city are still high as our sources have confirmed with us that the Prime Minister has been withholding salaries for many irregular militiamen as part of an ongoing push to bring armed militias in the capital of Tripoli under government control. Although there are still irregular militias in Tripoli which are not loyal to the government, Prime Minister Dbeibeh enjoys the support of a functional civil-service which is currently being used to regulate the armed-militias and bring them under government control.

The Maltese Herald has confirmed that the 444 Brigade is still loyal to the Prime Minister and is being used to keep law and order an prevent further fighting by other militias. Militias close to the Minister of Interior Emad Trabelsi and the Misrata militias are still supporting the government.

The government’s security headquarters has also been relocated from Tripoli to Tripoli International Airport, where the 444 Brigade is stationed to ensure the airportโ€™s security and reduce the risk of further clashes in the heart of the capital.
