The prospect of property buyers owning a seafront apartment on Manoel Island appears to be fading, as a national consensus begins to emerge on the issue.
Opposition Leader and Nationalist Party Leader Bernard Grech has changed his position over Manoel Island and is now supporting the demand made by environmental NGOs to turn Manoel Island into a public park. His position changed following pressure by environmental groups and also his MPs who gradually pronounced their position in favour of a petition signed by more than 29,000 people on the issue.
The Opposition Leader also remarked that the Labour Opposition in 2000 had approved of the concession contract.
Yesterday, the Prime Minister said that the government is studying the contractual concession to explore where MIDI is not fulfilling its obligations. According to the contract awarded to MIDI in 2000, MIDI has failed to complete its project with the provided timelines and risks losing the deed to Manoel Island. MIDI also doesn’t have the cash available to complete its project.
