In a series of high-level meetings and discussions by Nationalist Party MPs and Party officials several agreements were reached but the plan forward is still uncertain. The meetings were held in response to the publication of a devastating survey result in the press last Sunday where it was indicated that the Opposition Leader is rapidly losing support.
A majority of MPs and top Party officials agree that Opposition Leader Bernard Grech needs to resign and be replaced with a new leader. Party officials and MPs also agree that Bernard Grech needs to resign on his own volition as forcing him out could create further negative repercussions for the party.
Alex Borg is being ruled-out as potential party leader while other names that have been mentioned in the press have refused to consider the prospect.
A proposal is being floated within the Nationalist Party to publicly urge European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to assume the party’s leadership, although the proposal has not yet been accepted. Frustration is mounting within the party over Metsola’s continued refusal to take on the party’s leadership role.
It is not yet clear when the Opposition Leader and Nationalist Party Leader Bernard Grech will announce his resignation as this depends mostly on the potential leadership alternatives that PN can come up with.
