Georgia falls further into authoritarianism as student protesters are jailed

The Georgian state is currently escalating its clampdown on protesters with severe prison sentences. Georgia is currently governed by the Georgia Dream party which rigged the parliamentary elections last year to remain in power.

Protests have been ongoing in the capital city of Tbilisi for 200 days since the fraudulent election, while the government has made repeated efforts to suppress them by arresting protesters and deploying violent thugs to intimidate and disperse crowds.

The government is now arresting protestors and charging them with violence against the police. Last week, Mate Devidze, 21 years old, was sentenced to 4 years and six months in prison for police violence during the anti-government protests after the fraudulent election.

On the following day, graffiti artist Lekso Samkharadze was arrested near his home and later on taken to court. He was sentenced to 14 days in prison for insulting a government MP by calling him a “slave”. The government MP is Davit Matikashvili.
