G7 leaders are meeting in Alberta, Canada to discuss trade, Russian sanctions and security. US President Donald Trump is also holding discussions on trade with the EU Commissioner President with the aim to strike trade deal. So far, the US has only signed a trade deal with the United Kingdom.
EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen said that she has instructed her trade envoys to speed up the negotiating process and remained positive on a prospective good outcome for an EU-US trade deal. The EU and the US have set the 9th July as the tentative deadline for a trade deal.
Trump also held bilateral discussions with Canada over trade. While speaking to the press in the presence of Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, President Trump said that President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau decided to kick Russia out of the G8 and if such a decision didn’t take place, Russia wouldn’t have started a war against Ukraine.
Reuters are reporting that President Trump has opposed lowering price caps for Russian oil as part of a new effort to put more pressure on Russia and deplete its sources of revenue. The Ukrainian press is also reporting that President Trump is pressuring Ukraine not to hit at Russia’s oil infrastructure.
