Yesterday, US President Donald Trump left the G7 early and today his seat was taken by Ukraine’s President Volodomyr Zelensky. Yesterday at the G7, President Trump stated that Russia should have never been expelled from the G8 and that its expulsion prompted it to go to war against Ukraine. At least 14 people were killed in Kyiv, due to Russian airstrikes after Trump made that statement.
On the other hand, German Chancellor Freidrich Merz stated that pressure on Russia must increase. President Zelensky echoed the same position upon his arrival saying that Russia had denied all opportunities and requests for a ceasefire and peace. President Zelensky also met with NATO’s Secretary-General Mark Rutte who is also present at the G7 holding meetings with NATO G7 leaders on the sidelines.
Meanwhile, President Trump at home has threatened Iran with war including by directly striking at the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei if US troops are struck by Iranian forces. Israel is currently striking Iran’s missile-launching capabilities, military infrastructure, air-defence systems, and the top Iranian military command. Iran’s missile-launching capabilities seem to have been weakened significantly due to Israel’s persistent airstrikes as Iran’s retaliatory strikes have subsided significantly.
