The pan-European women’s group that advocates for safe abortion practices and women’s reproductive rights, called “My Voice, My Choice” has collected enough signatures to kickstart a European Union process to consider new legislation. The group has collected up to 1 million signatures from various EU member states.
The petition is calling for the introduction of obligatory public financing for safe abortion practices in all EU-member states. The group will now be allowed to present its demands to the European Parliament and eventually also meet with the European Commission to discuss their proposals.
The Maltese branch of My Voice, My Choice has successfully collected up 4410 signatures and had a minimum threshold of 4230 signatures. Up to 4278 signatures were validated.
Abortion in Malta remains a criminal act even when the health of the woman is at risk and is only allowed in exceptional cases when the life of the woman is at risk.
