Western technology dominates airs wars

In the ongoing air war between Israel and Iran, Israel has quickly secured dominance over the Iranian sky. Its series of air-strikes has decapitated Iran’s military infrastructure, air force, and missile-launching capabilities. Israel has also significantly degraded Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

Israel used US-made F-35, F-15 and F-16 jets for its attacks. The US aided these jets with weapons supplies and air refueling during their mission. There are no confirmed of any downed jets but there are confirmed reports that Iran successfully intercepted some Israeli drones.

Iran’s air defences include the Russian S-300 missile system, and locally produced air-to-air missile systems based on Russian models such as the Russian S-300. Iran’s air defence batteries are connected to a Chinese radar system called the JY-10.

An integrated system of Russian and Chinese air-defence technology was overwhelmed and proved useless against a series of attacks by around 200 US-made jets. This must seriously concern both Moscow and Beijing, as both harbour ambitions of territorial conquest, military dominance, and imperialism.

Below is footage of Israeli jets striking Iranian ballistic missile-launchers.

Yes air power in the West has always been superior. However, the failure of surface to air operations is due to SEAD or suppression of air defenses. In the current conflict specialist ground forces deep in Iran took out such air defenses paving the way for fighter bombers to drop their lethal cargo. As for aircraft well Europe should continue producing the Typhoon. Multi-role, rapid climb rate to intercept, agile and stealth aside is the World’s best all rounder.

  2. Mark, while I find it commendable that you are the only local media outlet that even attempts this kind on analysis, I’m going to have to draw a different conclusion. The S300 is a potent system and even older systems, such as the SA-3, had their successes such as the shootdown of an F117 over Yugoslavia in 1999. As they say, even a blind squirrel can find a nut once in a while. Precisely because these systems do indeed still pose a threat, the Iranian air defences were destroyed in advance with the use of asymmetric means such as UAVs and special forces.

We should be very cautious in drawing wider conclusions, both Russia and China still have potent air defences that are fully capable of detecting and engaging most if not all of the current western aircraft. In addition, quantity has a quality all of its own and both Russia and China have large amounts of modern and legacy systems that can make contested airspace a very unpleasant place to operate.

It is telling that all of the footage coming out of Tehran shows anti-air artillery being used to defend against attacks. Again, while this seems to be a throwback, the majority of US aircraft losses in Vietnam were to triple-A. This is my Israel still cannot claim air dominance over Iran, only air superiority.
