Paris and London postpone Palestine’s recognition to throw a lifeline at Iran’s Islamic regime

Yesterday, the Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was invited to address the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Iranians protested outside the building as he gave his address. Meanwhile, France and Saudi Arabia postponed the United Nations conference they were supposed to chair, which was intended to vote on the recognition of the state of Palestine, citing the war between Israel and Iran as the reason.

Instead of holding the UN conference, the French, German and British foreign ministers gathered in Geneva to meet with Iran’s Foreign Minister and discuss the ongoing war between Israel and Iran. The EU High Representative Kaja Kallas was also present.

In a statement, the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that France, Germany and the UK had concerns about Iran’s nuclear programme which they described as having no credible civilian purpose. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it hoped for a negotiated settlement to the conflict and expressed willingness for further talks.

The Iranian Foreign Minister denied that Iran would halt its efforts at uranium enrichment but said that its nuclear programme was only intended for peaceful purposes.

Israel, aided with logistical support from the US, is currently pummeling Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, along with its military installations and top-military and security command. Israel targeted further missile storages in Iran during this night.

Iran is a major ally and supporter of Russia and its war against Ukraine having supplied it with weapons, missiles and Shahed drones which Russia uses to attack Ukrainian civilians and cities.
