ISIS terror attack against Christian Church in Syria leaves up to 21 Christians dead

Yesterday, ISIS terrorists have conducted a series of suicide bombings in Damascus. A suicide bomber detonated himself in a Church full of Church-goers, killing up to 21 people and wounding dozens of others. Eyewitnesses say that the bombing was preceded by a shooting. The Church that was targeted was the Greek Orthodox Church of St Elias in the Dweila area, in the western outskirts of Damascus.

The Church was last bombed in 2016 by the forces of the Assad regime.

The Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has declared an official mourning for the victims.

Later on during the day, two car-bombs exploded in the Arnaout neighborhood of the Qadam district neighborhood in Demascus. Up to 60 people were killed as a result of the car-bombs.

According to Charles Lister of the MEI Syria Program, the Syrian government has foiled up to 12 ISIS terror plots in the past few months, two of which were planned against Churches. The US has also been helping the Syrian government to foil these plans with intelligence sharing.
