In a statement released by Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, the embattled nation said that attacks on Iran targeting its nuclear sites were justified to prevent a nuclear threat. As a nation that gave up its nuclear weapons, Ukraine said that it understands the risks that nuclear weapons pose. Ukraine also stressed that Iran is complicit in crimes of aggression by Russia in Ukraine for delivering weapons and technology to Russia, including the Shahed drones which are used to target Ukrainian civilians and cities.
In his late evening statement to Ukrainians, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Iran’s support of Russia has brought devastating human losses and consequences for Ukraine.
More than 200 Shahed drones flew to Kyiv today targeting civilian apartments and residential buildings. Civilians took cover in shelters and the underground metro stations as air-defences engaged most of the drones. The frequency and volume of Shahed drones sent by Russia against Ukrainian cities increased by up to 50% ever since President Donald Trump has entered office this year.
Iran has been a major ally of Russia during its war against Ukraine. Apart from supplying it with weapons and technology, Iran has also facilitated the Russian oil trade with its own shadow fleet, brokering, bunkering and logistics.
