Sudan’s de facto leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has arrived in Seville, Spain, to attend the United Nations’ Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development. This marks his first official trip to Europe in 2025, as he continues to lead Sudan’s military against the Emirati-funded and backed genocidal group, the Rapid Support Forces, back home.
The conference is a follow-up to the United Nation’s development goals and is being organised by Spain and Zambia. The United Nations is proposing, through a document called the “Sevilla Document“, that lenders and governments encourage development in Africa through increased bank lending and financing, debt relief, and by urging African governments to implement fiscal reforms, including raising taxes.
In the backdrop of the conference, General Burhan is expected to meet with EU officials and discuss a wide-range of issues including migration and the ongoing war in Sudan. A migration crisis is ongoing in the north of Sudan after Khalifa Haftar’s forces invaded Sudan from the Libyan border triangle. The Sudanese leader is expected to address the conference later today.
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, French President Emmanuel Macron and EU President Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen are also expected to attend the conference.
