Three students and a lecturer charged with hacking the FreeHour student app have been granted a presidential pardon, more than two years after they reported vulnerabilities to the company.

Students Michael Debono, Giorgio Grigolo, and Luke Bjorn Scerri, along with lecturer Mark Joseph Vella, had pleaded not guilty. The Office of the Prime Minister said the pardon was granted on the recommendation of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, acknowledging the groupโ€™s well-intentioned actions.

Criminal proceedings have now been dropped. The case had sparked debate on ethical hacking and the need to update legislation in line with technological developments.
