Israel bombs Al-Baqa Café in Gaza as it rains bombs on Gaza City

Last Monday, Israel bombed the seaside resort of  Al-Baqa Café as part of a series of aerial bombardments on Gaza City which have continued until earlier this day. The IDF is currently bombing the Żejtun neighbourhood in Gaza City.

At least two journalists were killed during the attack on Al-Baqa Café which was frequented by many journalists. The cafe was also one of the last places with a Wifi hotspot.

The journalists who were killed were Abu Hatab and Omar Zaino. At least 24 people have been killed in the attack. Other journalists who were at the café at the time, such as Bayan Abu Sultan, were wounded but survived the attack. Israel said it was targeting Hamas militants.

Israel has killed the largest number of journalists in the shortest span of time during a war in recent history. As of June 16, 2025, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) counted at least 185 journalists and media workers killed in Gaza by the IDF since October 7, 2023. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) counted 184 journalists and media workers killed as of April 2025, while the Gaza Government Media Office reported 202 Palestinian journalists killed by January 2025.
