Government proposes law outlawing fake news

The Labour government is passing a bill in parliament to amend the Electronic Communications Act, introducing a new law that will outlaw fake news and anonymous accounts and websites spreading fake news. The law also says that it outlaws attacks against the integrity of an electronic system.

The act will be punishable with a fine of up to โ‚ฌ10,000 and a prison sentence of up to two years.

You can find the link to the amendments here.

There are other interest factors in this bill which have not been mentioned but these are unrelated. The government seems to be adding this provision by stealth to ensure there is no discussion about it.

The Electronic Communications Act has been regularly used to suppress free speech most recently against comedians who were accused of threatening the Evangelical pastor Gordon Borg Manche.
