On Tuesday, 1st July, the Malta Motorsport Federation (MMF) concluded the first phase of its Officials Training Programme. This was delivered in collaboration with the Fรฉdรฉration Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the Automobile Club d’Italia (ACI). The programme was co-funded by the FIA and MMF, with additional support from the Malta Olympic Committee and SportMalta.
A total of seven scrutineers successfully passed their Karting Scrutineering exams, which were held in January. Among them are three newcomers to the field, who have now embarked on a trainee/apprenticeship track. These individuals will shadow experienced scrutineers until they receive final sign-off as operational scrutineers from their peers.
Further strengthening the Federationโs safety framework, seven doctors and five first-response doctors have joined the MMF ranks. Their inclusion represents a vital enhancement to the medical capabilities at local motorsport events, ensuring prompt and professional responses to any on-track incidents. The MMF has invested in high-quality training to prepare them for these crucial roles.
A comprehensive certification exercise
Additionally, 20 more officialsโincluding stewards, race directors, and clerks of the course across hill climb, karting, and circuit disciplinesโhave received certification. Of these, six are current members refreshing their skills, while 14 othersโlongtime motorsport enthusiastsโhave now taken on formally certified roles for the first time. These officials play a key role in the safe and professional execution of motorsport events across Malta.
The MMF will now proceed with Phase Two of the programme, which will see these officials gain hands-on experience at ACI events in Italy throughout Q3 and Q4 of 2025. For newcomers, collaboration with both local and international peers will be vital. Upon receiving multiple positive evaluations from their mentors, these individuals will be licensed to take on active roles in events held in Malta and Gozo.
During the certificate presentation ceremony, MMF President Duncan Micallef shared an overview of the Federationโs strategic goals and initiatives. Emphasising the importance of capacity-building, he stated:
โThe upcoming motorsport facilities in Malta will require a dedicated team of officials, medical professionals, and other key personnel. We are committed to establishing strong processes supported by highly motivated individuals. This is not only in preparation for the new facilities, but for the long-term future of motorsport in Malta. With these teams, we are ready to turn our dream facility into a reality.โ
