A couple of Nationalist Party Councilors who are eligible to vote for the leadership race of the Nationalist Party between Adrian Delia and Alex Borg have spoken to me recently and said that they will not be voting in the election because neither candidate represents their views and values.
Both Alex Borg and Adrian Delia hold populist views in addition to their conservative politics. The discourse around the ongoing leadership race of the PN is dominated by populists and centre-right members and moderates within the PN have no voice that represents their ideas in the leadership race.
Some of the moderates in PN may console themselves with the fact that Beppe Fenech Adami is currently supporting Adrian Delia. Beppe Fenech Adami was a strong supporter of incumbent leader Bernard Grech, and his endorsement of Delia is seen as a significant acknowledgment and legitimisation of Delia’s return as PN leader.
The next PN leader will need a deputy with moderate and centrist views to bring the party’s moderate voters under the fold of the new leadership. However, this prospect is undermined by the ambitions of the two leadership contenders, who are both populists and are each expecting an outsized role in the party if they fail to be elected as leader.
