Ħamrun Spartans face an uphill battle to keep their UEFA Champions League campaign alive after a 2-0 defeat against FK Žalgiris in the first qualifying round first leg, played in Vilnius on Tuesday evening.
Despite a spirited display from the Maltese champions, second-half goals from Liviu Antal and substitute Kassim Hadji gave the Lithuanian hosts a commanding advantage heading into next week’s return leg at the Centenary Stadium.
Ħamrun coach Giacomo Modica handed debuts to four new signings — Raphael Compri, Domantas Simkus, Matias Garcia, and N’Dri Koffi — and the newcomers helped the visitors enjoy a promising start. The Spartans held their own in the early stages, looking sharp in transition and solid in defence.
The match was finely balanced in the first half, with both sides trading chances. Zalgiris threatened first through Henrique Devens, who fired wide from close range. Ħamrun responded through Ryan Camenzuli and Matias Garcia, both missing the target from just outside the area. Eight minutes before the break, Joseph Mbong had a golden chance to put the visitors ahead, but his central shot was palmed away by Zalgiris keeper Carlos Olses.
The second half saw the home side push forward more aggressively. They thought they had broken the deadlock on 53 minutes when Antal set up Henrique to score, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Moments later, Ħamrun nearly took the lead themselves when Koffi burst forward and released Mbong, but the pass was slightly overhit, and Olses intervened.
However, the deadlock was finally broken just before the hour mark. From a Bruno Tavares free-kick, Yuri Kendysh flicked the ball toward Antal, who timed his run to beat the advancing Bonello and slot into the net for 1-0.
Modica reacted with a double substitution, bringing on Merlin Hadzi and Eder to boost the attack. Eder was at the heart of a controversial moment on 75 minutes when he appeared to be clipped inside the box, but the referee waved away penalty appeals.
The killer blow came six minutes from time when Hadji, just on as a substitute, raced onto a pass from Enoch Ofori and fired past Bonello to make it 2-0.
Ħamrun continued to press in the final moments. Mbong forced a spectacular save from Olses with a curling shot, and in stoppage time, Cadenovic’s header from a corner went straight into the goalkeeper’s arms.
Though the Spartans showed plenty of character and created enough chances to take something from the match, they now return to Malta with a two-goal deficit to overturn — a tall order but not an impossible one.
