Ħamrun Spartans pulled off a sensational comeback to eliminate Lithuanian champions FK Zalgiris and progress to the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, winning 2-0 on the night and triumphing 11-10 in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.
The Spartans entered the return leg at the National Stadium needing to overturn a 2-0 first-leg defeat. With determination and resilience, they did just that in the first half through goals from Saliou Thioune and Joseph Mbong, levelling the aggregate score by the 42nd minute.
Giacomo Modica’s side dominated large stretches of the match, especially in the opening 45 minutes. Ħamrun’s aggressive approach paid off as they took control of possession and forced Zalgiris onto the back foot.
Merlin Hadzi, restored to the starting XI, played a key role early on but was forced off with an injury after 20 minutes, replaced by Thioune — a change that proved pivotal.
After a period of sustained pressure, Ħamrun got their breakthrough. On 35 minutes, Rafael Compri delivered an inviting cross from the flank, and Thioune rose to meet it with a deft header that beat goalkeeper Carlos Olses.
Just seven minutes later, Mbong produced a stunning individual effort, picking up the ball in midfield before unleashing a rocket into the top corner, drawing wild celebrations from the Ħamrun fans.
A more muted second half and extra time
In the second half, the Maltese side continued to press for a third goal to avoid extra time. Mbong and Koffi combined brilliantly, but Olses produced a crucial save to keep Zalgiris in the tie.
As fatigue set in, the match grew cagey, with both teams battling heat, tired legs, and nerves. Zalgiris went down to ten men in extra time after Vukasin Radenovic received a second yellow card, but the Spartans couldn’t capitalise, and the match went to penalties.
What followed was one of the longest shoot-outs in UEFA club competition history. Both teams traded goals, saves, and misses across a total of 28 spot-kicks. Goalkeeper Henry Bonello made two vital saves, while Jovan Cadenovic buried the final penalty to complete the historic comeback and spark wild celebrations.
The result marks Ħamrun’s first-ever progression to the second qualifying round of the Champions League, where they will now face Ukrainian giants Dynamo Kyiv.
Modica praised his players for their character and composure, saying, “It was a performance full of heart. The players gave everything and deserved this win. Now we look forward to a new challenge.”
