Bank of Valletta’s stock takes a beating after Unicredit halves stake but still in second place

Updated: The Times of Malta has just released an article reporting that Hili Ventures bought Unicredit’s stake of BOV. Read it here.

BOV’s stock price has taken a beating after Unicredit halved its stake in the bank, pushing BOV further behind in the race for the place of the best performing stock of the year.

Unicredit, which previously owned 10.21% of BOV, has reduced its shareholding to 5.21%. The notice was released last Monday. Unicredit reported the sale netted them a total of โ‚ฌ50 million.

BOV’s stock price went down as of June 25th dropping from its yearly high of โ‚ฌ2.08 to โ‚ฌ1.89 and by more than 9%. The stock price is now at โ‚ฌ1.84.

The large sale of Unicredit’s shares has coincided with BOV’s share buybacks, suggesting that the bank may have timed these buybacks accordingly.

BOV was the best yearly performing stock on the Malta Stock Exchange earlier this year and prior to Unicredit’s sale. BOV is now in the second place with 27.28%. In the first place there’s Grand Harbour Marina with 61.29%. In third place there is Hili Properties with 26.32%.

Unfair comment. The report ignores the fact that BOV gave a 1 for 10 bonus issue on 24 June. That is what caused a reduction from 2.08 to 1.89 Euros in the share price. Nothing to do with the sale of nearly 5% of its shareholding by Unicredit to Hili Ventures.

    1. I don’t know what is the point of the bonus issue. In my case it destroyed value as although I now have 110 shares for every 100 I had before the overall market value is lower. I don’t even get a refund on the 35% Tax at Source.

  3. […] Bank of Valletta has announced that it has accumulated up to 0.76% of its own shares this year with its share buyback programme. This was the first share buyback programme by the bank in many years. BOV purchased 488,450 shares at the price of of โ‚ฌ1.8956 per share, for a total amount of โ‚ฌ925.910. The shares were bought at the same time when Unicredit sold half its stake of BOV. […]

  4. […] Bank of Valletta had a record year in 2024 and the results for 2025 also seem to be positive. The bank’s stock price has made a slow and grinding recovery from its lows with its stock price being suppressed for many years due to the financial crisis and a series of issues which were eventually resolved. The bank has also been conducting stock buy-backs while Unicredit has sold most of its stake. […]

  5. […] background of a much bigger reshuffling of BOVโ€™s shareholder base. UniCredit, the Italian bank, cut its BOV stake from 10.21% to 5.21% in July 2025 through a sale worth around โ‚ฌ50 million. UniCredit then reduced […]
