The MSE Equity Total Return Index opened with a bang this year, up by 2.8% on January 5th from December 23rd, just right before the holidays. It retraced back some of its gains and the index closed yesterday at 8979 points and was trending higher again.
The all-time high of the index was recorded on August 18th last year.
These were the best performing stocks in the last twelve months.
1) Lifestar Holding (LSR): 150%
LSR is a volatile and relatively illiquid stock of an insurance company. It’s current market capitalisation is that of up to €23 million and its stock price has fluctuated repeatedly with volatile moves.
2) Plaza Centres (PZC): 48.33%
PZC made improvements in its results of 2024 with 5% increase in revenue, a net profit of €1.14 million and an EPS of €0.049 slightly higher than last year’s €0.44. It’s stock price made a 60% move from November 5th to December 29th hitting €0.9 per share. In the last session traded at €0.89. It is still below its September 2021 high of €1. The stock is relatively illiquid.
3) Lifestar Insurance: 38%
Same as LSR.
4) Fimbank (FIM): 27.27%
Fimbank made a high of €0.25 in October last year and retraced down a bit since then. Fimbank was acquired by the Jordan Kuwait Bank last year, enabling the Kuwaiti bank to get an EU-banking license as a result.
5) Bank of Valletta (BOV): 22.79%
Bank of Valletta had a record year in 2024 and the results for 2025 also seem to be positive. The bank’s stock price has made a slow and grinding recovery from its lows with its stock price being suppressed for many years due to the financial crisis and a series of issues which were eventually resolved. The bank has also been conducting stock buy-backs while Unicredit has sold most of its stake.
The most actively traded stocks which enjoy a relatively much better liquidity than the others are BOV, GO, Malta international Airport, HSBC Mata (HSB), and APS in that order.
