Floriana stage comeback to eliminate Haverfordwest from Europe

Floriana secured their place in the UEFA Conference League second qualifying round after a dramatic 3–2 comeback win over Haverfordwest County in Wales, sealing a 5–3 aggregate victory.

Despite carrying a narrow 2–1 lead from the first leg, the Maltese side were stunned early at the Bridge Meadow Stadium. The Welsh hosts stormed into a 2–0 lead inside 17 minutes thanks to goals from Walters and Ahmun, overturning the aggregate score in their favour and putting Floriana under immediate pressure.

However, the Greens responded with resilience and calm. Carlo Zammit Lonardelli pulled a goal back two minutes later, giving Floriana crucial momentum. Then, just before the break, the turning point arrived. Haverfordwest’s Alaric Jones conceded a penalty and was sent off for a second yellow card. Jake Grech converted from the spot to level the match at 2–2 and swing the tie back toward the visitors.

Playing the entire second half with a man advantage, Floriana controlled proceedings and eventually found the winner on 67 minutes through Charles M’Mombwa, whose composed finish sealed their place in the next round. The Maltese side will now face Montenegrin club FC Ballkani in the next stage of the competition.

Daniel Portela’s men showed character and tactical maturity to navigate a difficult away fixture, responding well to early setbacks and capitalising on their numerical advantage in the second half.
