In 1999, NATO launched an air campaign against Serbia to halt the ethnic cleansing and mass atrocities being committed by Serbian forces against Kosovar Albanians during the Kosovo War. The intervention aimed to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe and escalating violence, which many feared could become a genocide.
The attacks came after nearly a decade of atrocities, massacres, and ethnic cleansing committed by Serbian forces against Bosniaks, Croats, and Kosovar Albanians. NATO’s attacks halted the Kosovo’s war and Serbia’s genocidal belligerence. The Serbian President Slobodan Milošević was prosecuted at the Hague along with his generals and top officials.
NATO’s intervention in Serbia and Kosovo was aimed at avoiding a genocide and preserving security in the heart of Europe. It was also the first time ever that NATO was engaged in hostilities against an enemy. The mission was a complete success and Kosovo is nowadays an independent state.
NATO was built as a defensive alliance. Those who join it do so via a democratic process by democratically elected governments. NATO is essential for Europe’s defence and its mere existence prevents Russia from attacking and invading Europe – this is also why Russia felt confident enough to invade Ukraine. The only thing standing between Russian totalitarianism and our democracy is NATO.
Without the US and excluding also Hungary, NATO is a European and Turkish defensive alliance against Russia. Most of Europe, alongside Turkey, are appalled by the Israeli genocide of Palestinians but out of fear and complacency, European leaders are still not doing anything to put pressure on Israel to stop its ongoing genocide. In Europe, there is political agreement but a lack of will to take action.
Israel has a right to exist. This should be stated clearly in contradiction to the cranks like Francesca Albenese who have turned the suffering of Palestinians into a social and political currency. Israel also has a right to defend itself against Hamas and the Russian-backed Axis of Evil that includes Iran and Hezbollah. Hamas is a despicable terrorist organisation which has sacrificed its own people for the ridiculous and superstitious Al-Aqsa Mosque cause which symbolises the dream of the Muslim takeover of Jewish land. Its leaders built shelters to hide and live in during their war against Israel while they left all of their people to die under the hellfire of Israel’s genocidal bombings. Rarely in history there ever was an organisation which was so despicable and so evil in its total disregard of the lives of their own people for the sake an idealistic and superstitious cause. It was Hamas which in the 1990s and early 2000s persistently and intentionally fought to prevent a peace between Palestinians and Israelis.
On the other hand, there is wide legal and political consensus that Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza and Palestine. Israel’s reaction to Hamas’ attacks of the October 7th are so excessive that people are left to wonder whether Israeli top military officials and political leaders actually wanted an October 7 event to happen as a pretext for a genocidal war.
Israel is not stopping with Gaza. It is now bombing Syria and intentionally creating a sectarian war in the south of Syria to divide and weaken the country: Israel gains from this as it keeps the land it stole from Syria in Quneitra as a pretext for security. Israel has now turned into the worst belligerent and aggressor in the Near East. In a war between Israel and Iran there seems to be no good side.
Israel’s intentions are to exile all the Palestinians from their lands: this is ethnic cleansing. Israel is conducting its ethnic cleansing campaign in Gaza with a military campaign against civilians and an imposed famine that is resulting in genocide. Israel’s intentions of ethnic cleansing are public. Even the Israeli hostages are no longer an issue for Israel: they have been completely forgotten and from being the main reason that Israel invaded Gaza, the Israeli hostages have now become just a footnote of Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza.
Despite continued protests in Tel Aviv, Israelis by a wide margin don’t seem to be bothered that Palestinian children are being slaughtered and a whole population that is being starved to death. The only Israeli political solution for Gaza right now is genocide and there seems to be no other Israeli alternative being proposed. Israel seems to be dead-set to fulfill its genocidal plans and no one is stopping it.
But Israel can be stopped: not with EU sanctions which will prove futile and symbolic: Israel’s biggest trading partner is the US followed by China. Israel can be immediately stopped and prevented from conducting its genocidal offensive against Palestinians with an aerial offensive similar to the one that NATO conducted against Serbia in 1999. Since NATO would never agree to this, a coalition of the willing can be created between France and Turkey to conduct this mission – together these countries alone can dominate Israel’s air defences and military capabilities with relative ease.
Europeans are rather let down by their leaders for failing to do enough to prevent a genocide in Gaza. This is probably one of the rare cases in which Europeans would overwhelmingly agree on a military intervention.
Israel’s offensive capabilities must be curtailed by force. The IDF should be restrained, and the prevailing arrogance and belligerent attitude among Israeli soldiers and officials—who have grown accustomed to fighting unarmed civilians and children, earning them the title of the “Nappy Army”—must be addressed. Israel needs to be humbled, and the only actors with the capacity to achieve this are the Europeans, potentially with the support of their Turkish allies.
