Food prices drive inflation in June 2025 as utility costs remain flat – NSO

Malta’s annual inflation in June 2025 as measured by the Retail Price Index was chiefly driven by rising food prices, according to the latest data from the National Statistics Office (NSO). The Food Index recorded a 4.5% increase, making it the largest contributor to headline inflation, followed by the Other goods and services category, which saw a 4.3% rise. The RPI increase in June was the same as the previous month.

Fruit, dining out push prices higher

The Food Index added +0.97 percentage points to overall inflation, with the biggest push coming from fruit prices. Within this index, restaurant services and take-aways posted the highest subcategory increase at 5.0%, while food items excluding dining services rose 4.3%.

The Other goods and services Index contributed +0.31 percentage points, largely due to costlier jewellery, and the Recreation and culture Index added +0.25 points, primarily linked to increased education expenses.

No price declines recorded

No downward contributions to inflation were observed in June – a clear signal of broad-based price resilience. The lowest inflation came from Water, electricity, gas and fuels, which remained completely unchanged at 0.0%, and Furnishings and household equipment, which rose just 0.2%.

Outlook: Inflation driven by essentials

With food and everyday services continuing to climb, the latest figures suggest persistent inflationary pressure on essential household expenditures, even as energy prices remain stable. The data reflects a cost-of-living trend heavily weighted towards food and personal services, with no signs of deflation in any key category.
