Food prices keep inflation up in Malta

According to the latest NSO release, food prices in Malta have remained the strongest driver for inflation in Malta with the Retail Price Index marking a 2.4% increase for the month of July. This is above the current Euro-area-average increase of 2%.

Beverages and tobacco also had the highest increase along with food items in the month of July – both at 3.8%. Overall, the Retail Price Index remained flat at 2.4%.

Water, electricity, gas and fuels saw no price increases mainly owing to government subsidies.

2.4% increase my foot! Supermarket pricing on goods have rocketed up by a 20 to 25 % increase on fresh produce, be it poultry, meats, dry food, cleaning detergents and so on!

We are going to end up eating cheap shite processed food, in cans or frozen! Our population cannot afford to purchase fresh goods with such wages, paltry salaries and more importantly, the paltry pensions we are receiving!

High Rent Expenses together with Utility expenses seriously bites into one’s paltry wage/salary or worst still, our meagre pensions in today’s day and age!

Those Citizens born before 1962 are being short changed by 10 per cent of their rightful pension! For one parent families it’s worse and despairing! New Tax and NI ‘eats’ out a great percentage of such wage or salary…. and such parent end up with the proverbial biscuit, when deducting such taxes … ending up with a pay cheque of a monthly NET income of โ‚ฌ1,300 ! Just deduct the monthly rent for let’s say โ‚ฌ650 for a modest 2 bedroom in Hamrun/Marsa area together with utilities’ expenses, say 100 monthly… that’s โ‚ฌ750 gone from one’s salary plus, adding TV/Internet/Cell Phone monthly expenses, and am being conservative here – being another โ‚ฌ60 monthly!

That leaves just โ‚ฌ490 for a family household of 3 persons to purchase food and other necessities, including transport, clothing and well being necessities! No room to save a bloody cent at the end of the month!!

    L’Aqwa Zmien My Arse!!

In the meantime we found bugs in pasta packets twice in the last month.

  3. Certain essential items prices have doubled in the last 3 years from one of the biggest supermarkets chain in our islands which advertise that they have the best prices in Malta. For example we used to purchase 4 packet 250g coffee โ‚ฌ5.99. Now the price is โ‚ฌ11.99 . Same to toilet paper and several other essential items. The list is endless.

I agree as a englis man now living in malta, I am shocked as to how the Maltese are being over charged on all goods, a shame there is no way that prices should rise that quickly in such a short time frame, ridiculous
