Alex Borg is ahead in the Nationalist Party leadership campaign in all polls

All polls on the Nationalist Party leadership campaign indicate that Alex Borg is in the lead. The Nationalist Party has made significant headways in Gozo thanks to Alex Borg where it is currently in the lead in the island-district. The Labour Party is reacting to Alex Borg’s advance in Gozo by attempting a re-organisation of its forces in alliance with the Joseph Muscat faction. It’s as if the worse of both political parties is finally coming out to play, as Alex Borg pitches a potentially populist version of the Nationalist Party.

Throughout his campaign, Alex Borg has claimed that he is centre-right, and has since distanced himself from his earlier admiration for Donald Trump, now highlighting Giorgia Meloni as a point of reference in an effort to project a more moderate political stance. Yet, the reason why Joseph Muscat’s faction is being fielded by Labour in Gozo has may also be related to shadow business interests that are close and support both Alex Borg and Joseph Muscat. This is also why Alex Borg still refuses to admit that he was mistaken when he lied about Fort Chambray, clearly indicating that he does not intend to go against the leading business interests in Gozo.
