Team Malta’s athletes continued to compete with determination on Day 5 of the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF), delivering commendable performances as the event nears its conclusion.
In the girls’ 200m final, sprinter Thea Parnis Coleiro once again impressed on the track. She crossed the finish line in 6th place, clocking 24.07 seconds, just 0.01 seconds shy of the national record she had set in her semifinal run the previous day. Her consistency at this high level underscores her potential as one of Malta’s rising sprint talents.
The race was won by Margherita Castellani of Italy, who added EYOF gold to her silver medal from the 2024 European Athletics U18 Championships. This underlined the strong competition faced by Parnis Coleiro.
Elsewhere, in Taekwondo, Alycia Cassar represented Malta in the Girls’ –63kg division. Facing a tough opponent in Viktoria Rucinski of Germany, Cassar was eliminated in the first round after a 2–0 defeat, bringing her EYOF campaign to a close.
Team Malta’s final participation at this year’s EYOF will take place on Saturday, 26 July, in Osijek, Croatia, where Sophie St. John is set to compete in the Balance Beam Final. The young gymnast will be looking to close Malta’s journey at the festival on a high note.
