The German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul visited the Christian village of Taybeh in Palestine (West Bank) as the village is currently a target of Jewish settlers. Recently, Jewish settlers tried to torch the ruins of the antique church of Taybeh by setting fire to the field behind it. Locals managed to control the fire before it could damage the church.
Following this incident, Jewish settler returned to the village and set fire to cars and sprayed graffiti on Palestinian homes.
The German Foreign Minister condemned the settler’s attacks against the village and said that Israel had the responsibility to provide security as the occupier nation. He described the attacks not as an isolated incident, but as a form of “organised terrorism” and reiterated that it was Israel’s responsibility to prevent these kind of attacks. The German Minister said that the EU will continue applying sanctions on the illegal settlers.
These shows of solidarity by European leaders with Palestinian residents of the West Bank are very rare but European leaders seem to be paying more attention to Palestine as Israel conducts its ethnic cleansing of Palestinian in Gaza.
