A man and a woman were arrested overnight after police discovered a large quantity of suspected drugs in their possession, with an estimated street value of around €650,000.
The two, a 27-year-old man from Montenegro and a 27-year-old woman from Serbia, were in a Volkswagen being driven by the man. They were stopped shortly after arriving in Malta by catamaran from Sicily, on suspicion of drug trafficking and importation from Italy.
The vehicle was taken to the Police garage, where officers conducted detailed searches. Concealed compartments beneath and at the rear of the vehicle were found to contain several packets of drugs – including approximately 15kg of suspected cannabis, 3kg of suspected cocaine, and hundreds of pink pills believed to be ecstasy.
Members of the Customs Department assisted the police during the operation.
Magistrate Joe Mifsud was informed of the case and appointed an inquiry. The two individuals are currently being held in police custody in Floriana as investigations continue.
