UPDATED: Heat dome over Europe persists after wild fires in Spain

UPDATED: A second freighting volunteer is being reported to have been killed yesterday in León while extinguishing fires in the region.

A high pressure heat dome on southern Europe is persisting after the heat helped caused extensive wild fires in Spain this week that burnt up to 3000 hectares of land as temperatures soared up to 44°C. In a northern suburb of Madrid called Tres Cantos, up to 180 residents were evacuated and one resident killed as a result of the fires. Most of the wild fires in Spain have been contained by August 12th but the heat dome in Europe persists.

Wild fires also spread earlier this month in southern France. Warning reports in Spain and Portugal about the dangers of wild fires are still citing a high risk. Italy also issued similar warnings with temperatures ranging from 37 to 41°C this week with high temperature readings expected to continue.

A nationwide blackout was reported yesterday in Iraq as temperatures nearly hit 50°C and demand and use for air-condition rises exponentially putting great pressure on the electric grid.

Average temperature readings in Europe and in the Persian Gulf have hit record levels this year. Temperatures in Europe this Summer are ranging 8–15°C above average with temperature readings in Saudi Arabia and the UAE hitting above 50°C last June.
