European football’s governing body used the high-profile stage of the UEFA Super Cup to deliver a strong humanitarian plea on Wednesday night. Moments before kickoff between Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur at Udine’s Stadio Friuli, a large banner bearing the words “Stop Killing Children. Stop Killing Civilians” was unfurled in front of both teams.
In a post on X, UEFA described the moment as “A banner. A call,” adding, “The message is loud and clear.” The gesture came less than 24 hours after the UEFA Foundation for Children announced a new initiative aimed at supporting children caught in war zones across the globe.
The program involves a partnership with Médecins du Monde, Médecins Sans Frontières, and Handicap International, all of which are currently providing urgent humanitarian assistance to children in Gaza.
UEFA’s humanitarian engagement extends beyond the current crisis in Gaza. The governing body has previously supported aid projects for children affected by conflict in Afghanistan, Lebanon, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, and Ukraine. By placing the banner front and center before one of European football’s showpiece events, UEFA sought to underline its stance against the targeting of civilians in war and its commitment to protecting children in conflict zones.
