According to the Israeli press, Israel fears getting suspended by UEFA in a vote it will take next Tuesday. Israel is accusing Qatar of having exerted enough pressure on UEFA’s executive committee to suspend it. UEFA’s executive committee is composed of 19 members and a President, Mosheu Zuares, who is coincidentally also an Israeli.
A suspension would mean Israel’s ban from various leagues including the Europa League, the Conference League, Champions League and the Women’s and futsal leagues.
Last month, on the 13th of August, UEFA unfurled a banner with the message “Stop Killing Children. Stop Killing Civilians” before the UEFA Super Cup final match between Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur.
Calls are growing in Europe for Israel to be banned from the Eurovision song contest and sporting events as critics argue that Israel should be treated just like Russia when it comes to international cultural and sporting events. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is leading the calls with several lawmakers across Europe joining in. The Italian Association of Football Coaches is also supporting the call.
Israel killed several Palestinian athletes and footballers during its genocidal war on Gaza including Suleiman al-Obeid, who was known as Palestine’s Pele, and Muhannad Fadl al-Lay (al-Lili).
