The debate over Malta’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest continues to intensify, with ADPD-The Green Party joining calls for a boycott should Israel be allowed to compete.
Party chairperson Sandra Gauci said Malta should seize every opportunity to send a strong message against what she described as Israel’s genocide in Palestine. She stressed that Eurovision, followed by nearly a billion people worldwide, carries significant symbolic weight.
“This time, the message must be one of a united Europe against the genocide taking place in Palestine,” Gauci said. “Performance art has always been a vehicle for political expression. This is a historic moment where music can deliver its message through silence – silence in solidarity with a people facing daily destruction.”
ADPD is urging PBS and the government to make a clear commitment not to participate if Israel remains in the contest. “Human lives must come first,” Gauci said. “The least we can do is send a clear signal of disapproval and condemnation.”
Her statement comes just days after both shadow culture minister Julie Zahra and Momentum urged the government to boycott Eurovision unless Israel is barred – a position Culture Minister Owen Bonnici has rejected, insisting the contest should remain “a place of dialogue.”
