I create problems and then I solve them – Supreme Leader Robert Abela

We are gently reminding our readers that before the Prime Minister stealthily ushered a massive construction and planning reform in parliament that aims to disregard all of Malta’s environmental regulations instituted in the past thirty years, previously, the Prime Minister used to harper about committing injustice if the local plans changed.

Now, it’s basically “to hell with the local plans” as the government rolls over like a bulldozer over the last remaining environmental safeguards. NGOs have described the construction and planning reform as the most corrupt planning reform in Maltese history. The planning reform is being opposed by most major NGOs and all the opposition political parties. The government has scheduled consultation meetings with NGOs following widespread opposition.

NGOs right in accusing the government of being deceptive with the reform: the government has created a problem which is now working to resolve and doesn’t deserve any applauses for proposing solutions to the same problem it has created. The government also intends to legalise all illegal structures including those built by squatters on various parcels of public land.

Adrian Delia, the contender for the Nationalist Party’s leadership is actively opposing the bill. Alex Borg, the other contender for the PN leadership, has also opposed the bill, saying that the government should have carried out more consultation before proposing it. However, Adrian Delia and Alex Borg differ on their positions as Adrian Deila believes that the current local plans should be conserved while Alex Borg agrees with a revision.

As far as I know the PN under the leadership of Bernard Grech before he resigned, made it clear that the local plans should not be amended specifically to accommodate a particular project, such as the Villa Rosa project, but holistically to reflect today’s realities. So it’s not a question of Alex Borg contradicting this stance. Either we have a total review or a piecemeal revision to suit a particular project. After all that’s what is happening now. So it’s useless to say leave everything as is and then review according to a particular project and developer. Besides, I just cannot understand why you’re constantly harping on Alex Borg.
