Over 30 people found residing illegally during traffic checks in St Paul’s Bay

Malta’s police have continued their nationwide traffic enforcement campaign, with over 45 vehicles stopped during a roadblock in Triq Burmarrad, St Paul’s Bay, on Monday.

The operation led to 31 people being detained for residing illegally in Malta, two drivers caught without a valid licence, and six others fined for various traffic-related irregularities. The checks were carried out in collaboration with officials from Transport Malta, the Detention Services Agency, Identity Malta, and JobsPlus.

This latest action follows a similar operation in Tal-Barrani, Żejtun, earlier in August, when police and LESA officers issued 17 fines, charged four drivers without a valid licence, and even intercepted a 16-year-old illegally driving a motorcycle. Further violations, including speeding at over 40 km/h above the limit, expired insurance, and driving under the influence, were also uncovered.

The surge in enforcement comes amid growing calls for stricter deterrents in the wake of several high-profile accidents, including the deadly Maserati crash. Authorities have stressed that inspections will continue across Malta and Gozo in the coming weeks, as part of an ongoing effort to restore public confidence in road safety.
