Teenage motorcyclist caught driving illegally during police road checks

Malta’s police, working alongside LESA officials, have stepped up routine traffic inspections across the islands in a bid to clamp down on reckless driving and make the country’s roads safer.

During a roadblock held on Sunday morning in Tal-Barrani, Żejtun, officers issued 17 fines for various irregularities and charged four drivers who were caught without a valid licence. In one particularly concerning case, a 16-year-old was stopped while driving a motorcycle. The vehicle was immediately seized by police, with further investigations underway.

These checks come on the heels of another operation last week, when police caught 17 vehicles speeding, including one car travelling at 113 km/h in a 70 km/h zone. The driver was also found to be under the influence of alcohol and placed under arrest. Authorities also uncovered further violations including expired insurance policies and unlicensed drivers.

The Police have stressed that such inspections will continue in the coming days and weeks, across various localities in Malta and Gozo.

The contrast between teenagers caught behind the wheel without a licence and the deadly Maserati crash underscores the urgent call for stronger deterrents. With regular police roadblocks now exposing a steady stream of offenders, the pressure is mounting to impose harsher punishments and restore public confidence in road safety.
