The President of the European Parliament echoed Mario Draghi’s speech at the annual Rimini conference and Meeting for Friendship Among Peoples organised by the Communion and Liberation (CL) Catholic movement. President Metsola said that Europe’s soft and economic power are no longer enough and highlighted Europe’s inability to effectively promote peace efforts in the Near East and especially in Gaza.
The President of the European Parliament also referred to Israel’s double-tap strike which killed up to four journalists and said that the attack was unacceptable but refrained from referring directly to Israel. She also highlighted that the Israeli hostages have yet not been free but also did not mention Hamas by name.
On the the latest EU trade deal with the US, President Metsola said that Europe’s alliance with the United States is its important and profound historical alliance and raised an optimistic tone on this future relationship. Following these comments, the Parliament’s President also said that Ukraine is fighting Russia thanks to European support and that this European support that is also helping Ukraine to have a strong position in ongoing negotiations brokered by the US.
The European Parliament President also gave an optimistic message on Europe’s future trading relationship with China.
In the latter part of her speech, President Metsola said European leaders have a responsibility to make Europe work better for entrepreneurs, enabling them to fulfil their projects with fewer obstacles. Her message remained that Europe had to change in order to become more relevant and fulfill its potential.
