Premier Giorgia Meloni says that the killing of four journalists by Israel is totally unacceptable: Israel violated the principle of proportional response

At the Rimini meeting of the Catholic Movement Communion and Liberation, the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni made very strong accusations against Israel. Although the Italian Premier condemned Hamas for taking hostages and keeping them still, the Italian Premier unequivocally condemned Israel for exceeding the principle of proportional response and described Israel’s killing of the four journalists at the Nasser Medical Complex as totally unacceptable.

The Italian Premier also condemned Israel’s attacks on Palestinian Christians both in Gaza and in the West Bank and said that these attacks further undermine peace given that Palestinian Christians have been a strong stabilising factor. She also said Italy is currently the largest European aid donor to Palestine and that she has worked to bring Palestinian patients from Gaza to Italy for medical treatment, adding that while others shouted in protest, she made sure to make a difference.

Prime Minister Meloni said that she agreed with many of the points stated by Mario Draghi during the conference however she stopped short of supporting a Federal Europe. Instead she said that Europe has to return to its roots in many aspects even in religion to find yet again its direction in as fast changing world. The premier also noted however that Europe needs to step up and reduce its security dependence on the US while noting that Europe’s waning power can lead it to irrelevance.

The Italian Premier also condemned illegal immigration and illegal drugs and highlighted that the rising issue of youths leaving their home-country to build a life elsewhere is a problem that should be addressed. More than half a million of young Italians have immigrated out of the country in the last decade.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola also gave a speech at the conference which is featured here.
