Russia jams the GPS of the EU Commissioner’s plane after Ursula von Der Leyen announces Europe plans boots on the ground in Ukraine

EU Commissioner President Ursula von der Leyen has been on a tour to eastern Europe over the weekend to discuss the ongoing Europe ReArm programme. She first flew to Estonia to give a press conference with Estonia’s Prime Minister Kristen Michael at the Amari Air Base. She then travelled to Poland where she and Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk held a press conference at the border with Belarus.

In parallel, she told the Financial Times that Europe is preparing “pretty precise contingency plans” for a possible European-led presence in Ukraine after a peace deal or a ceasefire ceasefire—not that the EU has decided to deploy peacekeepers now.

Following her comments, the EU Commissioner President was traveling to Plovdiv, Bulgaria when the GPS of her plane was jammed. Pilots resorted to paper-work to safely land the plane at the airport.

Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson Dmitriy Peskov has denied claims that Russia has jammed the plane of the EU Commission President. However, Russia has been consistently jamming the GPS of European commercial planes ever since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The targeted jamming of the plane of the EU Commission President can be considered as part Russia’s escalating measures against Europe.

The EU Commission President is expected to travel to Romania this evening.
