Hibernians pulled off the standout result of Matchday 2 in the Assikura Women’s League on Sunday, coming from behind to secure a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Birkirkara.
In the day’s most closely contested match, Birkirkara struck early through Izabella Camilleri, who found the net after just six minutes. Hibernians fought back and were awarded a penalty on the half-hour mark, which Natalee Geren calmly converted to level the score. The match remained finely balanced until the 72nd minute, when Birkirkara’s Maya Pellegrini unfortunately turned the ball into her own net, handing Hibernians a valuable comeback win and their second consecutive victory of the young season.
Mġarr United Continue Strong Start
Elsewhere, Mġarr United maintained their perfect start to the campaign with a commanding 5–0 victory over Valletta. Valeria Villegas was the star of the show, netting a first-half brace. New signing Josline N’Guessan continued her impressive form by adding another goal, while Yanina Mendez also got on the scoresheet. A late own goal sealed the comprehensive win for the Greens, who look every bit a title-contending side early on.
Swieqi United Bounce Back in Emphatic Fashion
Reigning champions Swieqi United responded to their opening-day setback in spectacular fashion, overwhelming San Ġwann with an 8–1 victory. Salamatu Abdulai led the demolition with a superb hat-trick—the first of the season—while Sara Saliba added a brace. Captain Shona Zammit, new signing Aleksandra Yaneva, and Andela Kricak also contributed goals. San Ġwann’s sole reply came from last season’s top scorer, Hailey Russell.
