General Workers’ Union registers industrial dispute with Carlo Gavazzi as company fails to issue severance packages

The General Workers’ Union has filed an industrial dispute against Carlo Gavazzi according to their official online press outlet. The union is protesting that the factory is rushing to close its operations in Malta and dismiss its workers without handing over promised severance pay packages to dismissed workers. Up to 140 s are said to be impacted by the closure.

David Darmanin, the union official for the workers’ section of electronic and communications sector, said that it was insulting for workers to be treated in this manner following decades of service. Carlo Gavazzi, a Swiss producer of electronic components, first opened its doors in Malta in 1988. The union also said that the Carlo Gavazzi management should have concluded these severance packages in discussions with the union before announcing employee dismissals.

Carlo Gavazzi is closing its doors in Malta after it announced that it is transferring its production lines in Malta to Mexico and China.
