Foreign Affairs Minister meets US Government cabinet officials: discussions revolve around energy and sanctions against Russia

Malta’s Foreign Affairs Minister and Deputy Prime-Minister Ian Borg held meetings with US government and cabinet officials earlier this week in Washington. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is yet to release a press release on the meetings. The Minister said that discussions revolved around energy but did not give any details.

Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg met with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Secretary of the Interior Doug Bourgum and Energy Secretary Chris Wright.

A diplomatic source in Washington has informed us that topics discusses included gas purchases, collaboration over oil-exploration activities and coordination on sanctions against the Russian shadow-fleet. Malta is arguing that it would be in its interest as a flag-registering country if the US applied the same sanctions against the Russian shadow-fleet which have been issued by Europe. We are also awaiting replies to double-check this information.
