Momentum has filed a Freedom of Information (FOI) request with the Public Works Authority following public concern over the transformation of a green picnic area at Ta’ Qali Family Park into a gravel-covered site.
The move comes after digital creator Trudy Kerr published a video highlighting the loss of the popular space. Kerr’s footage drew widespread attention, showing the green area now covered with gravel, sparking criticism from environmental advocates and members of the public.
Jason Micallef, chairman of Valletta Cultural Agency, dismissed the claims as “fake news” and accused Kerr of “bullying.” Momentum strongly rejected these remarks, with its General Secretary, Mark Camilleri Gambin, stating that Kerr’s video depicted “a verifiable fact” and accusing Micallef of attempting to intimidate citizens from voicing legitimate concerns.
Momentum’s FOI request seeks clarification on the project’s approval process, environmental evaluations, contractor selection, financial details, and the source of the gravel used. The party also requested disclosure of the individual or body that authorised the decision.
Environmental campaigner Arnold Cassola and the Citizen Watch page had previously raised questions about the project in June. Momentum said it stands in solidarity with Kerr and urged for transparency regarding the decision-making behind the works.
